What 30m, 50m, 100m and 200m actually permit, why the number on the case back is not a depth, and how to keep the water resistance a watch was sold with.

Water Resistance: What the Ratings Really Allow

The number on the case back is not a depth. A watch marked 30m is not rated to thirty metres of water — it has passed a static pressure test equivalent to that depth in a laboratory, with a new gasket, at room temperature, while holding perfectly still.

Nothing about swimming is static. That gap between the test and the world is why watches marked for water keep failing in it, and it is the single most useful thing to understand about the rating.

What each rating actually permits

Read the table as a description of activities rather than depths, because that is how the ratings are meant to be used.

The practical floor for anyone who swims regularly is 100m. Fifty metres will usually survive a careful swim, but it has no margin left for a dive off the side or a hard front crawl.

Why the number is not a depth

The test applies steady pressure to a stationary watch. Moving through water adds dynamic pressure on top of the static kind, and the fast movement of a swimming stroke can briefly multiply the load on a crystal or a crown.

Temperature adds another variable. Case metal and rubber gaskets expand at different rates, so a warm watch entering cold water can open a path that neither material would have opened alone.

That is also why hot showers are worse for a watch than cold swimming pools. Steam is small enough to pass a seal that liquid water would not, and soap actively degrades the rubber.

What makes a real diver’s watch

“200m” and “diver’s 200m” are different claims. The second is a specific standard, and a watch that meets it has been tested for far more than pressure.

A diver’s watch has to survive thermal shock, resist a knock to the crown, remain legible in darkness at a stated distance, and carry a timing device — the rotating bezel — that cannot accidentally show less elapsed time than has passed.

It also has to survive being tested at 125 per cent of its rated pressure. That margin is deliberate.

If a watch says only “200m water resistant”, it is a well-sealed sports watch rather than a certified diving instrument. That is fine for swimming and snorkelling; it is not the same thing. The dive watch listings in the archive show how the category was described commercially in the mid-2000s.

The crown is the weak point

Almost every water incident involves the crown. It is the one hole in the case that a person operates, and it is the one that gets left open.

A screw-down crown must be screwed fully home before the watch goes anywhere near water. A crown left a quarter turn out looks closed and is not.

Never operate the crown or the pushers underwater. Setting the time while swimming is the fastest way to flood a watch that was perfectly sealed a second earlier.

Chronograph pushers deserve the same caution unless the watch specifically says they can be used wet. Most cannot.

Water resistance is not permanent

This is the part that catches people out. The rating describes the watch when it left the factory, not the watch you are wearing now.

Gaskets are rubber, and rubber perishes on a timetable of its own whether the watch is worn or kept in a drawer. Five-year-old seals on an unworn watch are five years old.

Every case opening is a risk. A battery change without a gasket replacement is the single most common reason a watch stops being water-resistant, and the owner usually finds out in a pool.

Pressure testing is cheap and takes minutes. If a watch is going swimming for the first time in years, have it tested first rather than finding out experimentally — the care and cleaning guide covers when to book it.

Salt, chlorine and the things that eat seals

Not all water is equally hard on a watch. Fresh water is close to harmless; the other kinds are not.

Salt water leaves crystals as it dries, and those crystals sit in the gaps around the crown and bezel and attract more moisture. Rinsing in fresh water afterwards takes ten seconds and prevents nearly all of it.

Chlorinated pool water is chemically aggressive towards rubber. It will not ruin a gasket in a session, but a swimmer who is in the pool four times a week is ageing the seals considerably faster than the calendar suggests.

Sun cream and insect repellent are the quiet ones. Both attack rubber and some plastics, and both end up on a wrist precisely when the watch is going in the water — the strap guide is worth reading if yours is rubber.

A short checklist before anything gets wet

  1. Check the marking on the case back and match it to the activity, not to a depth.
  2. Screw the crown fully home, and check the pushers if it is a chronograph.
  3. Ask when the gaskets were last replaced. If the answer is “no idea”, have it tested.
  4. Rinse in fresh water afterwards, especially after the sea.
  5. Take it off for showers, hot tubs and saunas regardless of the rating.

What the archive’s listings said

Retail descriptions from the 2000s used the same numbers with rather less caution than a modern one would. Water resistance was quoted as a headline figure and the activity limits were left to the buyer to infer.

That is worth knowing if you are looking at an older watch. A twenty-year-old case marked 50m has twenty-year-old gaskets, and its rating describes a condition it has not been in for a long time.

Frequently asked questions

Can I swim with a 50m water resistant watch?

Gentle swimming, usually yes. Diving in, hard strokes and repeated impact, no. If you swim regularly, 100m is the sensible floor because it leaves some margin for the dynamic pressure the rating does not account for.

Can I shower with a water resistant watch?

Better not, at any rating. Hot water makes the case and gaskets expand at different rates, steam passes seals that liquid water would not, and soap degrades the rubber. It is the fastest way to shorten the water resistance you paid for.

Does 100m mean I can dive to 100 metres?

No. It means the watch passed a static pressure test equivalent to that depth, on a bench, with new seals. Actual diving involves movement, temperature change and impact, none of which the test simulates.

How often should water resistance be tested?

Annually if the watch swims, and always after the case has been opened for any reason. Gaskets perish with age regardless of use, so a watch that has sat unworn for years is not sealed just because it looks untouched.

Treat the marking as a description of activities, screw the crown down, and have the seals checked before the watch goes near water it has not seen in years.
