Understanding What Makes a Great Watch

A watch is a small argument about how time should be kept. Three decisions settle most of it — what drives the hands, what the case is made of, and what else the dial is asked to do. The archive records all three.

The movement
What drives the hands. The archive records 39 self-winding models and 31 driven by light, alongside the quartz calibres that defined the decade.
The case
What it is made of, and what protects it. 190 entries in stainless steel, 47 in titanium, and 180 specified under a sapphire crystal.
The complication
Whatever the dial is asked to do beyond the hour. 110 chronographs and 24 world-time dials survive in the catalogue.
