Band width is the simplest measurement on a watch and the one most often got wrong, because there are three plausible places to measure and only one of them is right.

Measure between the lugs, and nowhere else
Band width means the gap between the inside faces of the lugs, where the spring bar sits. It is not the width of the strap at its widest point and it is certainly not the width at the buckle.
A tapering strap is named for its lug end. A strap sold as 20mm is 20mm where it meets the case and may be 16mm at the buckle.

Measure with a ruler laid across the gap, or with calipers if you have them, and round to the nearest millimetre. Even numbers are far more common than odd, and 18, 20 and 22mm cover most of the market.

The pattern behind the table is simple: lug width sits close to half the case diameter. Designers depart from it deliberately, and when a watch looks subtly wrong this is often why.
How to measure watch band width
- Remove the existing strap, or push it aside so the lug faces are visible.
- Lay a ruler across the gap, inside face to inside face.
- Read to the nearest millimetre and expect an even number.
- If the strap is fitted, measure it at the lug end rather than anywhere else.
- Note whether the strap tapers, and by how much.
- Check whether the lugs are drilled, which makes changing straps far easier.
Step six is worth knowing before you buy. Drilled lugs let you push the spring bar out from outside the case, which removes the main way people scratch their watches.
Why the sizes are the sizes
Lug widths cluster on even millimetres because interchangeability is worth more to everybody than precision is.
That is the ordinary logic of standardisation: bodies such as ANSI exist because a shared dimension creates a market in parts, and a market in parts is worth more than any individual maker’s optimum.
Watches were never formally standardised in the way screw threads were, but the effect is the same. A 20mm lug width gives you thousands of straps; a 19mm gives you a handful at a premium.
So an odd lug width is a real cost of ownership, and it is worth checking before you buy rather than after.

Availability is the first. Eighteen, twenty and twenty-two are stocked everywhere; sixteen and twenty-four are thinner markets; anything odd is a special order.

Taper, and why it matters
Taper is the difference between the lug end and the buckle end, and it changes the character of a watch more than most people expect.
A 20mm strap tapering to 16mm draws the eye inward and makes the case read smaller and more formal. The same strap with no taper reads sporting and substantial.
Two millimetres of taper is subtle, four is noticeable, six is a statement. Most leather straps taper; most nylon and most bracelets do not.

Changing a strap without marking the case
Band width is only useful if you can act on it, and the swap is where most damage to a watch happens.
Use a proper spring bar tool with a forked end rather than a knife or a screwdriver. The fork locates on the spring bar shoulder; a blade slips and lands on the lug.
Work over a cloth, and push the bar out rather than levering it. If the lugs are drilled, push the pin through from outside and the tool never touches the case at all.

Replace the spring bars themselves every few years, particularly on a heavy watch. They are inexpensive, they fatigue, and a sheared bar drops the watch.
