Quartz is more accurate, cheaper to own, thinner and more reliable. Automatic watches outsell it at every price above a few hundred pounds. Both of those sentences are true, and the interesting question is why.

The comparison, measured

Five of six rows favour quartz, and the sixth is not measurable at all. Anyone who tells you the choice is close on the numbers is not looking at the numbers.

The gap is roughly a hundredfold and it is not close. A balance wheel is a large metal object swinging in air; a quartz crystal is a sealed tuning fork that barely notices the world.
Why the gap is a physics problem
Accuracy is a metrology question, and metrology institutes are unsentimental about it.
National measurement bodies such as METAS, the Swiss federal institute, define time against atomic references and calibrate everything else against them. On that scale both a mechanical watch and a quartz watch are approximations — but they are approximations several orders of magnitude apart.
The mechanical watch is fighting gravity, friction, temperature and its own diminishing mainspring. The quartz watch is fighting a small, predictable temperature coefficient.
No amount of finishing closes that gap, which is why the argument for mechanical watches has to be made on other ground entirely.

Over twenty years the difference is large and predictable.
A quartz watch needs a battery every two to five years, with new gaskets each time. That is a handful of modest bills, and a solar version reduces even those — the solar comparison covers it.
An automatic needs a full service every several years: a strip, clean, re-oil, reassembly, timing and reseal. Each one costs a multiple of a battery change, and on an inexpensive watch it can exceed the purchase price.
Against that, an automatic can be kept running indefinitely, and a quartz movement eventually becomes an unobtainable component. Over fifty years the arithmetic reverses.

Automatic vs quartz watch for everyday wear
Here the answer depends almost entirely on how often the watch is on your wrist.
Worn daily, an automatic is excellent: it stays wound, the resetting is rare, and the ritual is negligible. Worn three days a week, it is a nuisance — found stopped, reset each time, and running at the low end of its mainspring when it does run.
Quartz does not care. It is correct whether you picked it up yesterday or in March, which is the single strongest practical argument for it.

The comparison is usually framed as binary and it is not.

Four questions settle this for almost everybody, and none of them is about the movement.
How many days a week will you wear it? Fewer than five and an automatic spends most of its life stopped, which removes the pleasure people buy one for.
Would you pay a service bill in four years’ time? If the honest answer is no, an automatic is a watch with an expiry date rather than an heirloom.

Does it need to be right when you pick it up? If yes, that is a quartz requirement, not a preference.
And do you actually want a machine? That is the only question where an automatic wins, and for a great many owners it outweighs the other three combined.
Answer those four honestly and the decision makes itself. Most people who work through them discover they wanted quartz and had been told to want mechanical.
A smaller number discover the opposite, and those are the people who go on to enjoy an automatic for decades rather than resenting it after a year.
There is no wrong answer here, only a wrong reason. Buying mechanical for accuracy and buying quartz for prestige are the two mistakes, and both are common.
Buy quartz because you want the time to be right, and buy mechanical because you want the object. Stated that plainly, most people already know which they are.
