Manual wind and hand-wound are two names for one thing, and the fact that both are in common use causes more confusion than the mechanism ever does.

What the crown is doing
One stem runs from the crown into the movement and does three different jobs depending on how far out it is pulled.

Pushed in, the crown turns a winding pinion that winds the mainspring through a ratchet. Pulled out one click on a dated watch, it engages the date corrector. Pulled fully out, it engages the motion work and moves the hands.

On a screw-down crown the first job is always unscrewing it, and forcing a locked crown is the commonest way an owner damages a watch they are trying to look after.
How to wind one properly
- Take the watch off. A stem wound at an angle is a stem being levered.
- Unscrew the crown first if it screws down.
- Turn forwards in short movements — twelve o’clock toward you, roughly half turns.
- Count to about thirty, or wind until the crown firmly stops.
- Stop there. Do not test how much further it will go.
- Screw the crown back down if it is that sort, and check it is home.

The over-winding myth
You cannot over-wind a healthy manual watch. When the mainspring is fully wound the crown simply refuses to turn, and that resistance is the mechanism telling you it is finished.
What people call over-winding is almost always something else: a broken mainspring, which lets the crown spin freely and feels like winding into nothing, or a stripped ratchet.
The genuine risk is force. A crown turned hard against a full stop can shear a stem or damage the ratchet click, and that is a repair rather than a service.
So the rule is simple: wind until it resists, then stop, and treat a crown that never resists as a symptom rather than a mystery.

Why manual wind still exists
It would be reasonable to expect the automatic to have finished it off, and it did not, for three reasons.
Thinness is the first. A rotor and its bearing add a millimetre or two, so the slimmest watches are almost always manual — the thickness guide shows where that height goes.
The view is the second. A rotor covers half the movement, and a maker who has spent money finishing bridges would rather you could see them.
And the ritual is the third, which sounds sentimental and is the actual reason most owners choose one. Thirty seconds each morning with a small machine is either a chore or a pleasure, and people who find it a pleasure rarely go back.
Where the terminology comes from
The two names are a historical accident rather than a distinction.
Trade education has used both: the British Horological Institute, which has trained and examined watchmakers since the nineteenth century, sits in a tradition where “hand-wound” was simply the plain description of a watch before self-winding existed to contrast with.
“Manual” arrived later, as the retail opposite of “automatic”, and both have stuck.
One place the modern label does mislead: some movements sold as manual wind are automatic calibres with the rotor and reversing wheels removed. They work identically, and it is worth knowing when you are looking at a specification sheet.

How accurate is a manual wind movement
Five to fifteen seconds a day, exactly as for an automatic, because the timekeeping half of the two is the same machine.
The small practical edge is consistency. A watch wound to full each morning spends its day in the flat part of the mainspring’s delivery, rather than trailing off through a reserve that may or may not have been topped up by your arm.
That is worth a few seconds a day to a careful owner and nothing at all to a careless one.

Manual wind movement advantages and disadvantages
For: thinner, simpler to service, fully visible through a display back, and wound deliberately rather than incidentally.
Against: you must remember, every day. A manual watch in a rotation of three spends most of its life stopped, which is why the starter collection guide suggests keeping at most one.
It also asks something of the crown and stem daily, which is the one part of a watch a user can actually wear out.
None of that is a verdict. It is a description of a watch that asks for thirty seconds a day and gives you a machine in return.

Winding a watch that has stopped
A stopped manual watch needs slightly more thought than a running one, and the order matters.
Wind first, then set. A movement with no power in the mainspring can have its hands moved, but the train is unsupported and the setting is less precise; giving it a dozen turns first puts tension in the system.
Then set the time forwards, never backwards past midnight if the watch has a date. The date change is driven by a gear that engages for several hours around midnight, and reversing through it is how date wheels are damaged.

Then push the crown home, screw it down if it is that sort, and check it is seated. That last step is the one that keeps water out.
Do all of that in the same order every morning and it becomes automatic within a week, which is the point at which a manual watch stops asking anything of you at all.
