What the storage cell actually is
Early kinetic watches used a supercapacitor; later ones use a rechargeable lithium-ion cell. Both are secondary cells — designed to be charged and discharged repeatedly — rather than the primary battery in an ordinary quartz watch.
That distinction matters, because the two age in completely different ways. A primary cell runs down and is replaced; a secondary cell gradually loses the amount of charge it can hold.
Learned societies such as The Electrochemical Society publish extensively on exactly that behaviour: cycle life, capacity fade and self-discharge are the properties that decide how a rechargeable cell ends its life.
In a watch it shows up as a reserve that used to be months and is now days. The watch is not broken; the cell is tired, and it is replaceable.

Quartz accuracy — a handful of seconds a month — and completely independent of how much you move.
That is the point of the design and the thing that most surprises people. A mechanical watch that is under-wound runs differently; a kinetic watch either runs correctly or does not run at all.

Against: the cell is a consumable with a finite life, the watch is thicker than a plain quartz watch because it carries a rotor and a generator, and a watch left unworn for months will need charging and resetting.
Many models also enter a power-save state after a period at rest, stopping the hands while the circuit keeps counting, which is sensible and briefly alarming the first time it happens.
Where it sits against solar
Kinetic and solar solve the same problem — remove the primary battery — from opposite directions.
Solar harvests light, which is abundant but blocked by a sleeve. Kinetic harvests motion, which is available under a sleeve but absent while the watch sits in a drawer.

- Learn what the low-charge warning looks like — usually a seconds hand moving in two-second steps.
- Do not store it flat for months at a time; leave it somewhere it gets moved.

- Have the gaskets replaced whenever the case is opened for it.
- Treat a suddenly short reserve as cell ageing rather than a fault.

Is it worth choosing?
It suits one owner particularly well: somebody who wears the same watch nearly every day, wants quartz accuracy, and dislikes the idea of a battery.
It suits somebody who rotates watches much less, because the reserve runs down while the watch waits its turn and the resetting undoes the convenience.

What happens when it sits unworn
A kinetic watch left alone behaves differently from both of its parents, and knowing how avoids a lot of confusion.
For the first weeks or months it simply runs on stored charge. The reserve depends on how full the cell was and on the model, and it is measured in months rather than days on a well-charged watch.
Then most models enter a power-save state: the hands stop, but the circuit keeps counting internally, so when you pick the watch up and shake it the hands race round to the correct time on their own.

That behaviour alarms people the first time and is entirely normal. A watch whose hands have stopped but which springs back to the right time has done exactly what it was designed to do.
What is not good for it is being left completely flat for a long period, which is the one habit that shortens a secondary cell’s life.
